Child Sponsorship in Bukwini, South Africa

The Problem

As of May 2007, there are approximately 236 children who have been orphaned in Bukwini, South Africa. HIV/AIDS has ravaged this community, like so many regions in Africa, taking the lives of parents, grandparents, and family members. Children of all ages are left to fend for themselves, with little or no care, safety or loving home. The children are the indirect victims of this terrible disease. They are left destitute, with little hope for a way out of their situation. Basic needs you and I take for granted like clean water, good food, visits to the doctor, and a positive learning environment are not met for these children.

What can I do about it?

Child smiling. These vulnerable children need financial assistance for food, health care, and education. For as little as $40.00USD a month, you can sponsor a child. You can provide a child with food, access to good health care, and funds for educational expenses.

How will my money be used?

Child sponsorship support money is sent to Dan and Kristi Fair, a couple from the Kansas City area who are living in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to provide help and support to the South African people and children who have been ravaged by AIDS. They use the funds to purchase food and distribute it to the AIDS orphans in Bukwini monthly (click here for photos).

How do I know this is legit?

Shoal Creek Community Church has sent several representatives to meet the children of Bukwini and the Oceans of Mercy staff. Their eyewitness and regularly scheduled visits to South Africa help us to see where our money is going and how it is being used. Other local groups have partnered with Oceans of Mercy in child sponsorship and we maintain a good relationship with them as well.
